10 Tips for a Perfect Surprise Proposal Photo Shoot: A Guide for Men

Planning a surprise marriage proposal is exciting, but once the moment arrives, nerves can play tricks on you. As proposal photographers, we’ve helped many men plan their big moment, and with a few simple tips, you can make sure your photos and videos look as magical as the moment itself.

Here are 10 practical tips to help you get the best possible results from your surprise proposal photo session.

1. Dress well (and feel comfortable)

You may be wondering, what you should wear for your proposal or engagement photos.

The truth is, you don’t need a tuxedo, and your partner doesn’t need a ball gown. However, dressing nicely makes a huge difference in proposal photos and video. Choose clothes that feel like you, but slightly elevated. Make it feel like a special day. Taking her out for a romantic dinner is often the perfect excuse to dress a bit better than usual.

2. Avoid wearing black

Wearing black is not a great idea for a photo shoot. Black clothing tends to absorb light and lose detail, especially in sunny destinations like Spain or Italy.

Imagine wearing a black raincoat during your proposal. That coat will steal all the attention in the photo, taking the spotlight away from what really matters: YOU.

Soft colors like beige, light blue, or white (my personal favorite) work beautifully. You’ll look great in both close-ups and wide shots.

3. Skip bags and bulky items

Large backpacks, shopping bags, or jackets in hand can distract from the moment and make photos look bad.

Planning your day in advance helps a lot. Focus on iconic places, not shopping. Immerse yourselves in the culture of the city that will witness your love. Make it a special experience for your partner.

Imagine having the entire proposal planned out: you’ve bought the ring months ago, coordinated everything with the photographer, chosen a spectacular location… and just before you kneel down, you drop several bags on the ground, or that jacket you've been carrying around all day. Trust me, it won’t look good.

Remember that a clean photo always make a difference. Just you, your partner, and the place where you choose to declare your love. It will be a big day, so plan everything carefully.

4. Keep your phone on silent

A couple of years ago, I was photographing a wedding. It was very small, no more than 30 guests. And just before the groom said “I do,” his phone rang. The room went silent… But after a few seconds, everyone burst out laughing, including the bride.

In the end, it turned out to be a funny story, but most of the time, moments like that aren’t well received. So please, don't be that groom: once you reach the proposal spot, put your phone on silent. No checking the time, no notifications, no distractions. Just stay present.

5. Take a moment before proposing

Just like bags on the floor, having people around while you’re proposing to your girlfriend does not look good in photos, and detracts from the intimacy of the moment. Of course, some situations are unavoidable. If you propose during a football match, you can’t expect privacy. But that’s rarely what most people want from their proposal.

My advise? If there are people around when you arrive at the proposal spot, don’t rush. Take a few minutes, walk slowly, breathe. There is no hurry. Make eye contact with your photographer and wait for their signal. This way, you can be sure that everything will turn out perfectly.

6. Position matters (trust your photographer)

When it’s time to propose, remember this simple rule: Photographer on your right, background on your left.

At first glance, it may sound arbitrary, but here's why: most Western cultures read from left to right, and photos, if all their elements are balanced, as all proposal photos should be, follow the same reading rule. So if you apply this tip, your photo will naturally guide the viewer’s eye: first you. Then, your hands / the ring box. And finally, most importantly, her reaction.

But I want to emphasize this once again: this is just a tip. You can still get great results the other way around, as long as both of your faces are clearly visible.

7. Don’t turn your back to the photographer

This tip connects closely to the previous one, so I will keep it brief, but it’s important enough to mention on its own.

Try to stay slightly angled so both of your faces are visible throughout the proposal. This way, your reactions will be visible, creating stronger and more emotional photos.

8. No chewing gum

It may sounds obvious, but it happens more often than you think. Chewing gum is distracting and looks terrible in photos and videos.

The same applies to food. On the other hand, champagne works beautifully. A romantic toast, or pouring a glass after the proposal, often becomes one of the couple’s favorite moments to look back on.

9. Gently move her hair if it covers her face

If your partner wears her hair down, it will cover her face during the proposal. Think about it: as soon as you kneel, she’ll naturally look down. And her hair follows.

At that moment, the photographer can’t step in. They haven’t introduced themselves yet, and are keeping distance to capture all the details.

What should you do if this happens? If her hair falls over her face during the proposal, gently move it aside. It takes one second, it’s a sweet gesture, and it allows her reaction to be captured clearly.

10. Enjoy the moment

This is the most important tip of all. Forget about the camera, forget about the plan. The more you enjoy the moment, the more authentic and emotional your surprise proposal photos and video will be.
